The County Skills weekend is aimed for all warranted Adults (Leaders, helpers, Scout Network) within Scouting who either wish to lean the basics, improve their hillwalking skills or prepare themselves for a future hill-walking permit assessment.
Based at the Canal Barn Bunkhouse and running from 6pm Friday evening until 4pm Sunday we run a fully catered, fully staffed indoor-accommodation weekend combining classroom lessons with on-the-hills practical sessions.
Sessions and on-the-hill skills include micro navigation, team management and group leading skills, pacings and safety procedures. Class room sessions may include topics like an overview of the hill-walking permit scheme, how to interpret weather patterns, computerised mapping, interpretation/use of GPS and what to carry in your rucsac to name but a few. Evening entertainment may include guest talks (e.g. Mountain Rescue presentations), inspiring slide show presentations of activities recently undertaken by ASMAT members or fun lessons with a twist!
The accommodation allows us to cater for around 15 students, allowing a leader/pupil ratio of around 1 to 3; providing quality tuition and leadership. Bookings are now open (to assist with your diary planning) so don't delay - submit your application form today!
