Hardwood versus Softwood

For the more discerning deck, we are able to offer a variety of  hardwood options.
Ekki board and Red Balou are extremely tough (ekki harder), hardwood deckboards Being slightly thinner than a softwood deckboard, they have a warm reddish-brown appearance whilst dry, turning to a deep mahogany colour when wet. Another option is Yellow balou, a hardwood deckboard that blends well with Cotswold and South Cerney stone.
Cedar decking is fairly specialist to the UK market and not widely installed. Cedar deckboards are smaller than soft/hardwood and are not grooved. This makes them slippery and potentially unsafe for the general UK market. As they age they turn silver. As an imported timber, it is the most expensive of the three types to install.

The life expectancy of hardwood board is 30-years, is double the cost of softwood and incurs an additional charge for fitting due to it's hard consistency, involving additional work. Whilst a more expensive option to install, the hardwood deck needs no maintenance other than the occasional sweeping - a truly labour saving and long-term cost-effective investment for your garden.
