Hot-tubs are becoming increasingly popular and, coupled with decking, provide an ideal extension to the house for entertaining and relaxation. We have fitted several hot-tub bases now and detail below some of the considerations you need to undertake before purchasing a tub.

The base Needs to be a good, solid foundation. The hot-tub unit, water within and people using it can weigh in at up to 4 tonne so your base must be able to support this weight. If the foundation is inadequate, it may shift or settle after the hot tub is in place, causing stress to the shell. Our first base installation was done in conjunction with a very well known and recommended tub company who supplied the specs for the tub which were then computed for us by RMC Cement. A special mix concrete base of 500mm thick (dug into the ground) costs from £800 to install.

Site Access Compare the hot tub dimensions to the width of any gates and paths along the delivery route between the road and the installation site. Gates, fences, borders, paths, steps are all considerations on whether the hot-tub can be delivered 'on-the-ground' or whether it is necessary to hire a crane for the installation. A reputable hot-tub sales company will do a site survey prior to the sale and arrange this hire for you - from around £500.

Electric supply Depending on the model chosen, the power requirement will be between 13 amp and 30 amps single phase. A qualified electrician must install the power supply, which must be wired through a Residual Current Device (RCD), or circuit breaker, at least 2 metres away from the hot tub. All cable must be armoured and should terminate at the installation site with a 4 metre tail. We recommend a waterproof isolator switch positioned close to your hot tub. Work on around £500 for this installation.
