Sleepers used for garden design have evolved at a dramatic rate over the last few years. Old traditional UK railway sleepers have been joined by softwood and new green, oak sleepers, offering the client a range of materials, costs and associated lifespan.
The list of uses for sleepers are endless – from pond construction and raised beds (for either flowers or vegetables) right through to landscaping solutions like retaining walls, edging steps and garden furniture. The only limit to their use is your imagination!
Second hand railway sleepers are treated with creosote and therefore are not suitable for applications around the garden where there is a frequent risk of skin contact, such as where young children play or raised vegetable beds. New green oak sleepers or softwood sleepers therefore step into this void, performing well alongside many other uses in the garden. Recycled railway sleepers equally perform well elsewhere in the garden making them a good environmentally friendly, product.
Chainsaws are the predominant cutting force behind the shaping of sleepers and competence and safety in using this machinery is of paramount consideration. Specialist landscaping screws are required for the fixing and joining of these sleepers.
